Graduate Student & Assistantship Recruitment Program Registration

Northern Illinois University's (NIU) Graduate Student & Assistantship Recruitment Program (GSARP) is a partnership between the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management and the Counseling, Adult & Higher Education (CAHE) department designed to introduce prospective and current students to essential program infomation, professors, and staff members. Additionally, GSARP enables students to interview for graduate assistantships within the Division of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management.

In order to complete the GSARP registration process, you will need to have an electronic copy of your resume, saved in Word format, including the names and contact information for three references, a cover letter, and a writing sample. There is no page minimum or maximum for the writing sample; hiring authorities would like to see any type of sample to illustrate your best writing ability. Please allow 30 minutes to complete this registration process – once you begin registration, you will be unable to save your progress.

IMPORTANT: Visit to review the job descriptions and determine your graduate assistantship interests. During the registration process, you will need to indicate ALL of the assistantships in which you are interested, IN RANK ORDER (1 = 1st choice, 2 = 2nd choice, etc.). Please note: Some graduate assistant positions may not be available for the upcoming academic year due to personnel or funding changes.

The registration involves six sections:

  1. Personal information
  2. Prior educational experiences
  3. Current NIU graduate school application process
  4. Preferences for graduate assistantships
  5. Plans for attending the program
  6. Submission of resume, cover letter, three references, and writing sample
